After Claire confidently inserted her key into the lock, she struggled to open the door. Not because she was afraid to enter but because something was blocking the way. With effort she succeeded in creating a modest passageway, and as she slipped inside, past the overturned hall table, she glimpsed further damage: each of the framed prints was scattered about the floor, their glass fronts lying in shards. It was the kind of destruction she had imagined herself inflicting, but the reality of it made her sick to her stomach. Had someone forced their way in? Moving around the mess and further inside, Claire took in only small glimpses of the chaotic environs. She stepped over a displaced dinner chair and entered the living room where she found Eleanor sitting in her recliner. Her eyes were fixed to an indiscernible point in the woods, burned there for all time. Claire collapsed next to her mother and took up the cold hand. A frightful scenario bloomed in her mind and she crumpled into herself. She felt weak but she willed herself up and to the bay window. Reaching into her purse, she numbly withdrew her phone, dialed emergency services, and relayed the pertinent information before the device fell from her hand and she began shrieking like something that belonged in no other locale than the wilderness beyond.
